The story behind the art
In 1920, William S. Harley received a U.S. Patent 1,360,110 for an invention titled “Engine Construction.”
The patent illustrates Harley’s work on a compact motorcycle power unit that brought the engine and selective-speed transmission together within an integrated construction.
The detailed patent drawing offers a fascinating look inside the engineering ideas being developed during Harley-Davidson’s early years — gears, shafts and mechanical components shown exactly as they were presented in the original patent.
Granted on November 23, 1920, this patent represents an era when William S. Harley was not simply helping build motorcycles. He was actively developing and patenting the engineering that would help shape them.
Today, more than a century later, that engineering drawing becomes a piece of motorcycle history for the wall.
