Filed in September 1919 and patented on December 23, 1919, the design was assigned to the Harley-Davidson Motor Company of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Unlike a mechanical patent covering a new engine or component, Ziska's patent protected the ornamental design and appearance of the motorcycle.
