The motorcycle was designed in 1901 by Oscar Hedstrom. Hedstrom who at that time worked for the Hendee Manufacturing Company but later Hedstrom would become a partner in Indian Motorcycles. Hedstrom was was designing a gasoline powered motorcycle from their bicycles.  

In 1902, Indian Motorcycles introduced their first production motorcycle, known as the Indian Single. This motorcycle was a significant milestone in the history of Indian Motorcycles and the motorcycle industry as a whole.

The Indian Single was powered by a single-cylinder engine that produced 1.75 horsepower, and it had a top speed of around 25 miles per hour. The motorcycle featured innovative chain drive technology and was built with high-quality materials, making it a reliable and durable machine.
