In 1901, the Indian Motorcycle Company was founded by George M. Hendee and Carl Oscar Hedstrom. The two friends had a passion for motorcycles and the desire to create a reliable machine for riders. Their first prototype was built in Hendee’s hometown of Springfield, Massachusetts. It was a single-cylinder engine with a stylish look, which caught the attention of the public. 

George M. Hendee was an American inventor, entrepreneur, and founder of one of the most successful companies in American history. He was born on October 2, 1866, in Springfield, Massachusetts. Hendee was a natural-born entrepreneur with an insatiable curiosity for machines and technologies.

At an early age, Hendee showed an interest in bicycles, and it quickly became his passion. He began experimenting with various bike designs throughout his teenage years until he eventually founded the Hendee Manufacturing Company in 1897, which later became known as the Indian Motorcycle Company.

As the company’s president and chief designer, Hendee led Indian to become a leading motorcycle manufacturer in America and the world. He pioneered many innovations such as a two-cylinder motor, chain-driven transmission, and an electric start. Hendee retired from the company in 1916.

Oscar Hedstrom

Oscar Hedstrom was a Swedish-American inventor who is best known for co-founding the Indian Motorcycle Company in 1901. He was born on January 20, 1871, in Sweden, but later migrated to the United States with his family in 1880. Growing up, he developed an interest in mechanics and became an apprentice machinist at the Aurora Automatic Machine Company.

At the age of 24, he met George M. Hendee, who was looking to manufacture bicycles with an engine. Together, they developed the Indian motorcycle, which became one of the best-known motorcycle brands in the world. Oscar was the master mechanic of the company, and he was responsible for designing and improving the motorcycles’ engines.

Oscar’s innovation in motorcycle engineering was due to his thorough understanding of engines’ workings, combined with his natural curiosity and passion for mechanics. His love for engines was so profound that he would tinker with them in his free time, and he went on to develop numerous innovations that made his motorcycles faster and more reliable. He was an expert in his field, and his contributions to it made him a pioneer in the motorcycle industry.
